Get Organized with the Help of Technology

Spring has almost sprung, which means the weather is getting warmer, the days are getting longer, and it’s time to start the tedious task of uncluttering your home — also known as the dreaded spring cleaning. But never fear; like most things these days, getting organized this spring can be made easier and more convenient with the help of a few handy apps* and websites. Give these a try:

Freecycle.org

Freecycle is a nonprofit organization that lets you give away your stuff for free to people right in your hometown. You sign up through Yahoo! and join groups in your area, which are typically categorized by neighborhood. Then, you can post and receive messages about items that you want to get rid of or that other people are getting rid of. For example, if you live in New York City and wanted to get rid of a box of books, you’d join the New York group and post the message, “OFFER: Box of fiction books.” If someone responds, you work with that person to have the books picked up for free.

Manilla.com

Manilla.com is an award-winning, free, and secure website and mobile app that will help you simplify and organize your daily life, no matter what season it is. But now that it’s time to start your spring cleaning and get organized, Manilla will help you de-clutter your life for good. With Manilla, you can manage your bills and accounts in one place, online or on your smartphone with just one password. Manilla offers unlimited online document storage forever, for free, which means you can say goodbye to the endless piles of paper mail that may be cluttering up your dining room table.

Cleaning Manual

When you’re tearing through your closet to see what you want to keep or toss, it’s inevitable that you’ll come across an item or two that has a stain. But don’t be so quick to throw out those pieces! The Cleaning Manual app has tips on how to care for stains on materials of all kinds, so your garments last longer. It also gives advice on how to wash and protect certain materials so you don’t ruin them in the cleaning process.

eBay

Using eBay.com or the free eBay mobile app allows you to easily and conveniently sell or auction your stuff online. Post pictures of your item and watch as other eBay users bid. Once the auction is over and you get a buyer, you simply ship the item to the buyer and receive payment via PayPal. eBay is perfect for people who are getting rid of smaller items that won’t generate high shipping costs.

Craigslist

Craigslist.com or the Craigslist mobile app are extremely useful for selling or donating items in your neighborhood. You can easily post your items right on the site and wait for someone to bite – for free! If you’re having trouble getting a buyer, you can simply give away your items for free by clicking the “free” link under “for sale.” From there, just post your item and have someone who wants it come pick it up.

Task Rabbit

Don’t just clear out the physical clutter this spring—lighten your task load, too. Task Rabbit is an online and mobile service that gives you your very own personal assistant. To get started, simply describe your task on the website, name your price or request bids, and then choose an actual person to complete the task. You only have to pay once the task is complete. Looking to go grocery shopping? Someone on Task Rabbit can do it for you. In the market for a wedding photographer? Task Rabbit will find one for you. It’s that easy!

These are just a few handy tools for getting organized. Do you have any favorite apps or websites that bring order to your life? Tell us about them in a comment below!
